Communication Is An Art

Everybody says if you are good in communication, the world is your oyster. Is it, really?

Words are powerful and either it will work for you or against you. When most of the times where it will work for you then you’ll definitely get what you asked for. On the other hand, you might not exactly get what you need if you can’t communicate what really is it that you wanted to achieve.

Take this for example. My sister is turning 18 this year of 2020 and knowing that I have the skills to organize an event, Ma tapped me to arrange things for the pre debut photoshoot. It was also a good thing that I have network of people who could cater to what I was organizing, it became easier for me at first. But being an event organizer has it’s own struggle if you ask me.

Why did I say that?

There are things that may be out of our control and all you could do is communicate well and empathize well when things don’t go out exactly how you wanted it to be. The world is in quarantine as you may know and in our city the government decided to implement back what we call Modified Enhance Community Quarantine or MECQ, so how did this affect me as the organizer of a photoshoot event?

I won’t go over the full list of whatever’s allowed to not allowed but based on the guidelines private cars are allowed long as it occupies two people per row and provided that you are listed under Authorized Person Outside Residence (APOR) you can go out and do your business. Meaning, two conditions should be met. But how do we really define APOR and how does it apply to us?

So much for getting overwhelmed with APOR, Google is your best friend when comes to internet research trust me so here’s the simplest explanation from my point of view. If you don’t have a quarantine pass or travel pass and you are not over the age of 21 then you should stay home.

Here’s the challenge though

People I contacted before MECQ were more than ready and even took quite amount of effort to make sure that the work will be done properly and of quality, I was grateful things were coming my way. But then we had to take another look on the MECQ guidelines…

Now, we obviously didn’t meet the conditions and as a law abiding citizen of the Philippines we need to follow because it is the right thing to do. Safety always comes first. This has put me in a test to how I communicate with my Mom because she does the most of financing and I as the oldest daughter is there to make sure that everything doesn’t go awry.

I have to admit, this whole thing made me disappointed. If I have assessed the risk much better we wouldn’t get upset so much. But I taught myself resiliency and I know I should talk to my Mom about my frustration and I did.

Even though we may not exactly say what we wanted to say by how we say it, having an open and understanding mind can get you through frustrations.

In the end, I think the art of communication also requires you to open your mind and heart so that you can be aware of other people’s paradigm and so that you can position yourself to get your message across.
